A simple 10-minute Black History Month assembly
KS2 · 10 minutes · Preparation: none · You need: nothing
1. Ask. “If you discovered a page of British history that you had never seen before, what should you do with it?”
2. Explain. Black History Month gives us a chance to look at some people and stories from British history that may be less familiar.
3. Meet. Introduce four examples: John Blanke, Mary Seacole, Walter Tull and the Windrush generation. Each belongs to a different part of Britain’s story.
4. Think. “What can one person’s story tell us about the past — and what can it not tell us?”
5. Decide. Ask pupils to choose one rule for fair history: look for evidence, use careful words, or give people credit for what they actually did.
The message: Black history is part of British history. Good history does not hide people or exaggerate their role. It looks carefully at the evidence and tries to build a fair picture of the past.
