(Used to launch Fairtrade Fortnight Activities but possible at other times)

Linked to other assemblies exploring aspects of love from 1Corinthians

1. As children come in, use overhead or pictures of two bunches of bananas (or even the real thing if you have them) one with fairtrade mark and one without. Use the question "Spot the Difference" and take responses from children.

2. Explain one of the differences is that one bunch is Fairtrade, but what does that mean? Depending on level of understanding of your children, develop a discussion of fairtrade.

3. Make the link with the section from the 'love detectives' : "Love isn't happy with evil, but is happy with the truth.." If we are acting 'in love' we will work for fairness (ie truth) not unfairness (evil).

4. There are lots of resources to illustrate this on the fairtrade schools website (http://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/action/fairtrade-fortnight-2014 )  including a script for an assembly explaining how fairtrade bananas ensure that farmers have a fair share of the profits made by their harvest. (see http://foncho.fairtrade.org.uk/ ).

5. You could use the video clip introducing Foncho's campaign for fairly traded bananas:

6. Prayer/reflection: Close your eyes and consider one thing you can do today to make a fairer life for someone else. Ask for help to do this...

7. So what? (final commitment to put this value in action): Make a commitment to fairtrade for yourself, your family or your school. Find some way of recognising this in school and sharing your commitment with others.

Thanks Culdrum. Another addition to your great series of assemblies. I am sure many assembly leaders are enjoying these and being helped to develop their own versions. Thank you.
