 As children come into assembly, display an optical illusion such as the old woman / young woman picture or puzzle or code for them to work out silently

Say: Sometimes there are things which we just don’t understand. We find it hard to see what is going on. When was the last time you didn’t understand something? (Collect a few ideas). How does it feel when you don’t understand something? (frustrating, annoying, embarrassing, challenging…)

2 Even really wise people sometimes don’t understand. All through the Bible there are stories of clever people who get it wrong and simple people who get it right. In fact Jesus thought this was so funny that he said to God, ‘I praise you, Father…because you have hidden these things from the wise and clever and shown them to little children!’ (Matthew 11:25)

Do you know, you can be wise, even if you’re not very good at maths or reading or spelling? Here’s a story from near the beginning of the Bible, from the time when the people of God were still wanderers in the desert. In the story there is a very clever man, called Balaam. And the other character is someone so stupid that she could only say ‘Eeyore!’ Well, she could only usually say ‘eeyore’!

(If you have a donkey puppet or a soft toy donkey, use it to help you tell the story)
