In 1996 there were 16.5 million families in the UK. This increased to 17.1 million in 2006. The proportion of married couple families has decreased over the last ten years, (accounting for 71 per cent of families in 2006, compared with 76 per cent in 1996). Over the same period the proportion of cohabiting couple families increased to 14 per cent from 9 per cent. The proportion of lone parent families increased by less than one per cent over this period.

The number of households in the UK grew to 24.9 million in 2006 from 22.9 million in 1991. However, the number of family households has not grown as fast as the overall number of households. Census data show that the proportion of family households decreased between 1991 and 2001, from 70.6 per cent to 67.0 per cent, a drop of 3.6 per cent. This decrease was offset by a 3.9 per cent increase in the proportion of one-person households over the same period. The growing trend in people living alone accounted for much of the increase in the overall number of households and, as a result, the average household size has decreased. One person households have grown from 26.1% of all households in 1991, up to 30% in 2001. Households with families went down from 70.6% to 67% in the same period.
