Here are the Assembly Ideas

Every school has a start of term week where we aim to welcome the students and set the tone for the coming term/year. Here we have brought together some of the assembly ideas in AssemblyTube that might be of use in your first week of the new term. Good luck.

A video intro maybe.

Words to Feeling Good

Finding NemoWiki: First Day of school
Everyone gets a little nervous about the first day of school.
Don't think it is just you.
Your friends are a bit nervous too.
Even your teachers get a little nervous. It is quite normal.
You will soon feel relaxed about it.

Are you a "no" person? Do you seize opportunity?

A Song
Are you excited about starting a new term?
Hopefully you are more excited than this.
Start the new term with a positive attitude.
If things did not go so well last term, this is a chance to start afresh.
Set yourself some new challenges.

Parable Of The Two Builders - Wise & Foolish

Planning ahead, which of these 2 plans fits your style?

1)This year’s going to be a breeze. I should sail through it without much effort. I’ll take things as they come, do the minimum required to pass and get on with enjoying life. Last-minute revision’s always worked for me in the past. I can count on my friends to help me blag my way through when homework’s due. Why waste effort when there are so many other activities I want to do?

2) The pressure always gets greater as I move up the school from year to year. I’ve got to plan carefully so I make the most of my opportunities. There needs to be a balance between work and social activities. It’s important I get plenty of time for sport because that’s enjoyable and keeps me healthy. I’ll also keep a check on what I eat – not go on a diet, but eat plenty of healthy food. I need to make sure I get a good night’s sleep, too, especially from Saturday night to Wednesday night. If I plan this right, it could be both an enjoyable and a successful year.

Will you be proud of your achievements this year?

The Value of Education
Malala YousafzaiWiki. The 15-year-old joined other pupils at Edgbaston High School for Girls for her first day back at school.
"I think it is the happiest moment that I'm going back to my school and today I held my books, my bag and I will learn and talk to my friends, I will talk to my teacher and I think there is no more important day than this day," she said.
Malala was airlifted to Britain for treatment after TalibanWiki gunmen shot her while she was on her way home from school in northwestern Pakistan.
The militant group said it targeted her because she promoted "western thinking" and criticised the group's behaviour when it took over the scenic Swat ValleyWiki where she lived.

Poems
Poem 1
My Teacher Took My iPod
by Kenn NesbittWiki

My teacher took my iPod.
She said they had a rule;
I couldn't bring it into class
or even to the school.

She said she would return it;
I'd have it back today.
But then she tried my headphones on
and gave a click on Play.

She looked a little startled,
but after just a while
she made sure we were occupied
and cracked a wicked smile.

Her body started swaying.
Her toes began to tap.
She soon was grooving in her seat
and rocking to the rap.

My teacher changed her mind.
She said it's now okay
to bring my iPod into class.
She takes it every day.

Poem 2
All My Great Excuses
by Kenn Nesbitt

I started on my homework
but my pen ran out of ink.
My hamster ate my homework.
My computer's on the blink.

I accidentally dropped it
in the soup my mom was cooking.
My brother flushed it down the toilet
when I wasn't looking.

My mother ran my homework
through the washer and the dryer.
An airplane crashed into our house.
My homework caught on fire.

Tornadoes blew my notes away.
Volcanoes struck our town.
My notes were taken hostage
by an evil killer clown.

Some aliens abducted me.
I had a shark attack.
A pirate swiped my homework
and refused to give it back.

I worked on these excuses
so darned long my teacher said,
"I think you'll find it's easier
to do the work instead."

Poem 3
"Now We Are Six"
by A.A. MilneWiki

When I was one,
I had just begun.
When I was two,
I was nearly new.
When I was three,
I was hardly me.
When I was four,
I was not much more.
When I was five,
I was just alive.
But now I am six,
I'm as clever as clever.
So I think I'll be six
now and forever.

Teachers Only?
One for the teachers? Or parents!
Do you feel like this at the start of a school term or year?
Are you a teacher?

Here's a game to play in Assembly called "Where are You Going?" (adapted from a TrueTube idea)

For this game you’ll need a blindfold (a clean tea-towel is the perfect length), two volunteers and a short obstacle course.

Set up the obstacle course at the front of your Assembly Hall before the students arrive. It doesn’t have to be complicated - a few chairs to walk around, a bench to step over, a desk to crawl under and so on. You might want to indicate the route that should be taken through it with a chalk line on the floor or - if chalk is no longer available in your school - a line of masking tape.

On a chair at the end of the obstacle course, place two small prizes. Most students will do anything for chocolate.

At the start of the assembly ask for two volunteers - two people who trust each other - to come up to the front. Explain that one of them will be blindfolded and guided through the short obstacle course by the other who can only give them verbal instructions from the side - “Left a bit, right a bit, step over the bench...” etc. If they can get through the maze within a certain time limit (say, two minutes) they will be allowed to take away the prizes. Hold up a prize to get an “oooh!” from the audience.

Your pair can either flip a coin to decide who will be blindfolded, or they can decide quickly between themselves.

When tying the blindfold, make sure that it is tight enough so that the volunteer cannot see at all - not even down, or they’ll just be able to follow the line on the floor. Obviously, don’t make it so tight that they can’t breathe or so that you’ve restricted the flow of any major blood vessels.

Position the blindfolded student at the start of the obstacle course and count them down for the beginning of their two minutes. Three... two... one... hang on! Too easy. Spin them round a few times (five should do it) and then face them in completely the wrong direction. Now start them off: Three... two... one... go! And their partner has to guide them as best they can from the sidelines.

If you have lots of room, you could do this as a race between two pairs of students.

Whether your volunteers succeed or not, award them with the prizes and get the audience to give them a round of applause as they go to sit down.

Teaching Point
It can sometimes be very difficult to achieve a goal if you’re not sure where you’re going or how to get there.

From baby to teenager.
This is all part of the journey.

Dutch artist Frans Hofmeester (from Utrecht) has filmed his now teenage daughter portrait for 15 seconds every week from the day she was born. Over a time-lapse video, you are witness to one of the most mysterious, profound processes of human life - growing up - accelerated into four minutes.
